Where do the names of wildflowers come from?

Sometimes it is just plain obvious where the names of certain wildflowers come from. For example, the photo below is a wildflower we photographed on our San Andreas Fault Tour called Dead-Man's Fingers. The illustration below it is almost an exact replica of the wildflower in the photo OR is it the other way around? You decide!

Dead-Man's Fingers is also known as a desert pot-herb because this plant was used by pioneers and Native Americans for greens. Occasionally found on alkaline slopes and washes, this succulent, green tufted plant is reported to have a pleasant taste.
