How were these rocks formed in Joshua Tree National Park?

How were these rock outcroppings formed? What geological forces created these fantastic shapes?  Scientists and Geologists alike believe that the unique landscape was born more than 100 million years ago. Molten liquid, heated by the continuous movement of the Earth's crust, oozed upward and cooled while still below the surface. These plutonic intrusions are a granitic rock called monzogranite. The photo below was taken on our Joshua Tree Adventure Tour. On the tour, you'll find out what the monzogranite turns into when water percolates through the fractured joints of the rocks.
