Desert Rock-Pea!

Desert Rock-Pea is a perennial shrub that can be found in washes and on rocky hillsides. The flowers are yellow and turn red with age. Also known as deer vetch, it is important forage for Desert Mule Deer and Bighorn Sheep. Cool moist winters favor the development of an abundance of Pea Aphids on Desert Rock-Pea which attract many Convergent Lady Beetles (Hippodamia convergens) whose larvae devoure the aphids. The photo below was taken yesterday on a Joshua Tree Adventure Tour!
