The Nocturnal Treasures Tour is back for the summer!

There is nothing like the desert at dusk. Everything seems to come alive! The cool night air allows the wildlife the opportunity to scurry about without the extreme heat of the daytime sun. The dramatic sunset and night sky are added features of this very popular tour. Joshua Tree is known for star gazing since there is very little light pollution. Bring your camera...you never know what you might see on your Nocturnal Treasures Tour!

Red Coachwhip on a Joshua Tree Adventure Tour!

This is the most commonly viewed snake within Mojave Desert. It can be seen on many of the roads sunning itself in the early to late morning hours. It is the fastest snake in the desert moving at up to 7mph and can reach up to 6 feet long with a slender, whip-like body. Coloration may vary from gray and tan to pink with black crossbars always present on the neck. As the snake gets older, it begins to take on a more distinct reddish appearance. The photo below was from a recent Joshua Tree Adventure Tour!

Great Basin Whiptail Lizard on San Andreas Fault Tour!

The Western Whiptail is a long snake-like lizard with a narrow elongated head. It can often be seen running along in an alligator like fashion from bush to bush. They forage actively on the ground during the day and eat anything they can catch, including flying insect, beetles, scorpions, and other lizards. Sometimes they can be seen digging in loose soil for food. The photo below was taken on a recent San Andreas Fault Tour.

A Desert Tortoise on a Joshua Tree Adventure Tour!

The desert tortoise has a high domed shell, or carapace, that is greenish to dark brown in color. Its front limbs have heavy, claw-like scales and their flat shapes are well-designed for digging. The desert tortoise is able to live where ground temperatures may exceed 140 degrees F because of its ability to dig underground burrows to escape the heat. It is one of the most elusive inhabitants of the desert, spending up to 95% of its time under ground to escape the heat of the summer and the cold of winter. They live in burrows which they dig. These can be 3-6 feet deep. They will spend November through February in a torpid or dormant state in their underground burrows. The photos below are from a recent Joshua Tree Adventure Tour.

Collared Lizard on a Joshua Tree Adventure Tour!

Collared lizards in the wild have been the subject of a number of studies of sexual selection. In captivity if two males are placed in the same cage they will fight to the death. This is not only in captivity though for it will fight if any other male is in its presence. Females will not fight though because just like many other animals in the animal kingdom the males fight to get the females' attention. Then they will try to kill the other male to win the female over. Males have a blue-green body with a light brown head. Females have a light brown head and body. The photo below is from a recent Joshua Tree Adventure Tour.

A rare Rosy Boa on Joshua Tree Adventure Tour!

Rosy Boas spend most of their lives concealed beneath rocks and in crevices to escape the elements and natural predators. Granite outcroppings are the most common geologic association inhabited by the Rosy Boa. Less often they are found in association with volcanic or other rock types. Only in rare places do Rosy Boas inhabit rockless environments. In areas with few rocks Rosy Boas will use rodent burrows for concealment.
